The number on the box, VA, is the number that fools workstation buyers. A 1500VA UPS does not deliver 1500 watts, it delivers its watt rating, usually 900 to 1000W here. A modern workstation with a high-end GPU can pull more than half of that under load, and a UPS running near its limit has almost no runtime and an annoying alarm. The watt figure, not the VA, is the one to check.

This ranking sorts six UPS units by watt rating, waveform, topology and extras like monitoring and outlets. We reviewed the specification lists supplied for each, and runtime is not quoted because it depends on your load. A modern power supply with active power factor correction can behave badly on a simulated sine wave UPS, so waveform matters more here than it does for a router.

Before you buy

What Actually Matters

01

Watts, not VA

A UPS can only supply its watt rating. Add up your PC's peak power, plus monitors, and keep the total under about 70 percent of the watts. The wattage is printed on the UPS and on your PSU label.

02

Pure sine wave

Active PFC power supplies in modern PCs expect a smooth sine wave. Simulated waveforms can make them shut down or buzz. Choose pure sine wave or PFC sinewave for workstations.

03

Line-interactive vs standby

Line-interactive units correct voltage swings without switching to battery. Standby units switch to battery more often. For areas with unstable power, line-interactive extends battery life.

04

Outlets and surge ports

Count the outlets with battery backup and the surge-only ones. Printers should go on surge-only. Some units add Ethernet and coax protection.

05

Battery type and replacement

Lead-acid batteries last about three to five years and are replaceable. Lithium units last longer and tolerate heat but cost more. Check whether the battery can be replaced.

Our Ranked Picks, Reviewed

1

Best Overall

APC Smart-UPS 1500VA/900W Line Interactive UPS with SmartConnect, SMC1500C

Our verdict: A pure sine wave, line-interactive 1500VA/900W UPS with SmartConnect cloud monitoring.

The APC Smart-UPS SMC1500C is a 1500VA/900W line-interactive UPS with pure sine wave output, APFC compatibility and SmartConnect cloud monitoring.

It takes first place because it is the one built for workstation life. Pure sine wave output is what active PFC power supplies expect, so they run happily on battery. Line-interactive topology regulates voltage without switching to battery for every sag, which spares the cells. SmartConnect lets you watch the UPS remotely, which suits long renders and builds that run overnight.

Buy it for important, unattended work. Skip it if the price is out of reach.

Best for Many Peripherals

CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS Battery Backup and Surge Protector, 1500VA/1000W, 12 Outlets, AVR, Mini Tower, UL Certified

Our verdict: A 1500VA/1000W PFC sinewave UPS with 12 outlets, AVR and an LCD, in a mini tower.

The CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD is a 1500VA/1000W PFC sinewave UPS with AVR, 12 outlets, a mini tower form factor and UL certification.

It ranks second because it offers more watts than the APC models and a generous 12 outlets, which suits a desk loaded with monitors, a dock, a NAS and a printer. The sinewave output suits PFC power supplies, and AVR boosts or trims voltage without using the battery. It lacks remote monitoring, so you rely on the LCD at the unit.

Choose it for a peripheral-heavy workstation. Skip it if you need cloud alerts.

Best Pure Sine Value

APC UPS 1500VA/900W Pure Sine Wave UPS for Computer, Electronics, BR1500MS2

Our verdict: A 1500VA/900W pure sine wave APC with 10 outlets and a replaceable battery.

The APC BR1500MS2 is a 1500VA/900W pure sine wave UPS with a standby topology, APFC compatibility, 10 outlets, coax and Ethernet surge protection and a replaceable battery.

It ranks third because it delivers pure sine wave output at a lower price than the Smart-UPS. The standby topology is a little less refined than line-interactive, since it transfers to battery for more events, but it suits a single high-wattage workstation. The replaceable battery extends its life.

Buy it for a high-wattage rig without remote monitoring. Skip it if you want line-interactive regulation.

Best Lithium UPS

GOLDENMATE 1500VA/1000W Lithium UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector, Gray

Our verdict: A compact 1500VA/1000W lithium UPS with a strong real-watt-to-VA ratio.

The GOLDENMATE is a 1500VA/1000W lithium UPS with surge protection, a strong real-watt-to-VA ratio and a compact body.

It ranks fourth because lithium batteries tolerate heat better than lead-acid and last longer, which matters for an always-on workstation in a warm room. The compact size makes it easier to tuck under a desk. The listing says nothing about waveform, so check the product page before powering a PFC power supply.

Choose it for a warm room or a small space. Skip it if you need confirmed pure sine wave.

Best Budget 1500VA

APC UPS 1500VA/900W Battery Backup for PCs, Office Electronics, BX1500M

Our verdict: A well-established 1500VA/900W APC with AVR, for supplies that do not need pure sine wave.

The APC BX1500M is a 1500VA/900W UPS with AVR, multiple outlets and the established BX series design.

It ranks fifth because the BX series uses simulated sine wave output, which some active PFC power supplies dislike, so check your PSU manual. If your supply tolerates it, this is the cheapest way to get 900W. AVR trims or boosts voltage without draining the battery.

Buy it if your PSU is not fussy and you want to save money. Skip it if you run a sensitive PFC supply.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a UPS run my workstation?+

Runtime depends on the load and battery. At a heavy load a 900W unit may run only a few minutes, which is enough to save work and shut down. Treat a UPS as a shutdown tool, not a generator.

What is the biggest mistake?+

Plugging in a laser printer. Printers draw huge surges and can overload a UPS, so connect them to surge-only outlets or directly to the wall.

Is the Smart-UPS worth it over the CyberPower?+

If you value remote monitoring and line-interactive design, yes. If you need 1000W and many outlets at a lower price, the CyberPower is better.

How hard is setup?+

Plug the UPS in and let the battery charge for several hours. Connect the PC and monitors, plug in the USB cable and install the power software so the PC shuts down safely.

How often do batteries need replacing?+

Lead-acid batteries typically last three to five years. The UPS will show a replacement warning. Lithium units last longer.

Can I plug a power strip into a UPS?+

It is not recommended, because it can overload the UPS and void protection. Use the UPS outlets directly.

Final take

The APC Smart-UPS SMC1500C is the best UPS for a workstation, with pure sine wave output, line-interactive design and cloud monitoring. The CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD is the choice for 1000W and 12 outlets, the APC BR1500MS2 is the pure sine wave value, and the GOLDENMATE lithium is compact and heat-tolerant. Size by watts, not VA.
