The 6 Best UPS Battery Backups for a Computer and Monitor, Ranked & Reviewed

The short answer

The APC BR1500MS2 is the best UPS for a gaming or workstation PC with a monitor, with 900W of real capacity, pure sine wave output and a replaceable battery. The CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD is the cheaper sine wave option, the GOLDENMATE offers 800W from a lithium unit, and the APC Pro models suit ordinary office PCs.

Size a UPS by watts, not by the VA number on the front. A 1500VA label sounds generous, but the watt rating beneath it, often 60 percent of the VA, is the real ceiling. A desktop with a mid-range graphics card and a monitor can pull 300 to 500 watts under load, and a UPS that is loaded close to its limit gives only a minute or two of power and wears its battery quickly. Leave headroom of about a third.

We ranked six UPS units for a PC and monitor by real wattage, waveform, regulation, battery type and outlets. We reviewed listings, which state watts for all of these. Runtime figures are absent, and depend on load, so we do not quote any. The goal is time to save work and shut down cleanly, not hours of use.

Before you buy

What Actually Matters

01

Wattage headroom

Add up the PC and monitor draw and keep it under about two thirds of the watt rating. Overloading shortens runtime. Check the watt figure, not just VA.

02

Pure sine wave

APFC power supplies can trip on the stepped waveform of cheaper units. Pure sine avoids it. Look for sine wave in the listing.

03

AVR

AVR corrects voltage dips without using the battery, saving wear. Look for AVR in the specs.

04

Battery type

Lead-acid batteries last three to five years and are often replaceable, and lithium lasts longer but may not be user-replaceable. Check which.

05

Outlets

Not every outlet gives battery power. Plug the PC and monitor into battery outlets and keep printers on surge-only ones.

Our Ranked Picks, Reviewed

1

Best Overall

APC UPS 1500VA/900W Pure Sine Wave UPS for Computer, Electronics, BR1500MS2

Our verdict: 900W of real capacity, pure sine wave and APFC compatibility, with a replaceable battery.

The BR1500MS2 offers 1500VA and 900W, a pure sine wave output that works with APFC power supplies, 10 outlets with coax and Ethernet surge protection, and a replaceable battery. It sits at $200 to $500.

It wins because a gaming PC and a large monitor can approach 600 watts, and 900W leaves headroom. Pure sine output keeps modern power supplies stable on battery. The coax and Ethernet protection cover the modem, and a replaceable battery extends its life.

Buy it for a high-performance PC. It costs the most and is bulky.

What we like

  • +900W real capacity
  • +Pure sine wave for APFC
  • +Coax and Ethernet protection
  • +Replaceable battery

Watch out for

  • −Most expensive here
  • −Large and heavy

Buy it if: Buyers with a gaming or high-performance PC plus monitor who want real wattage headroom.

Skip it if: You have a basic office PC.

2

Best Sine Wave Value

CyberPower CP1000PFCLCD PFC Sinewave UPS Battery Backup and Surge Protector

Our verdict: PFC sine wave output, AVR and an LCD at a lower price than the APC.

The CP1000PFCLCD has a PFC sine wave output, AVR, an LCD display and multiple outlets. It costs $100 to $200. The listing gives no watt rating, so check it.

Second place goes to it because pure sine wave at this price is rare, and the LCD shows load. It suits a mid-range PC and monitor.

Buy it for an APFC PC without maximum headroom.

What we like

Watch out for

  • −Watt rating not listed
  • −Less headroom than 1500VA

Buy it if: Buyers with an APFC PC who want pure sine without paying for maximum headroom.

Skip it if: Your PC draws a lot of power.

3

Best Lithium Pick

GOLDENMATE 1000VA/800W Lithium UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector, Gray

Our verdict: A lithium 1000VA/800W unit with an unusually high watt-to-VA ratio.

The GOLDENMATE offers 1000VA and 800W, a lithium battery, surge protection and a compact footprint. It costs $100 to $200.

Third place fits because 800W from a 1000VA unit is a high real-power ratio, and lithium cells typically last longer than lead-acid. The listing does not name AVR or the waveform. The battery is not a user-swappable cartridge.

Buy it for more real watts in a small body. Check waveform first.

4

Best Office Desktop

APC 1000VA/600W Pro UPS Battery Backup for Office Electronics, AVR, BX1000M

Our verdict: 600W with AVR, rated for office electronics.

The BX1000M provides 1000VA and 600W with AVR, multiple outlets and an office electronics rating. Street pricing is $100 to $200.

The fourth spot fits since 600W covers a normal office desktop and monitor. It is not meant for a high-performance build.

Buy it for office PCs.

The BX850M offers 850VA and 510W, AVR, a compact form and an office rating. It costs $100 to $200.

Fifth place goes to it because it is the smallest of the pair, a basic PC and monitor fit within 510W, but there is little headroom.

Buy it for a basic office PC.

The BE650G1 provides 650VA and 390W, a standard replaceable battery and surge protection. It costs $100 to $200.

It ranks last because 390W suits only a low-power PC and a small monitor, and AVR is not listed.

Buy it for a laptop dock or mini PC.
