The 7 Best Managed Network Switches for VLANs, Monitoring and Control, Ranked & Reviewed

The short answer

The NETGEAR GS308E is the best managed switch for most home labs and small offices, with eight ports, up to 64 VLANs, a cross-platform web GUI and automatic DoS and loop protection for under $25. The TP-Link TL-SG108E is the budget alternative with a 3-year warranty, and the Ubiquiti USW-Pro-24-PoE is the Layer 3 choice.

Managed switches have a reputation for being complicated, and the cheap Easy Smart tier exists to fix that. You get the useful parts of management, VLANs, QoS and port monitoring, in a browser page that a non-network engineer can follow, for the price of a good lunch. The trap is expecting full enterprise features: Easy Smart switches do not route between VLANs, and that is a Layer 3 job.

We ranked seven managed switches from a 5-port NETGEAR to a 24-port Layer 3 Ubiquiti, covering Easy Smart, UniFi-managed and Layer 3 designs. We looked at VLAN counts, protection features, PoE and warranty, and we flag that several budget models have one-time web setup quirks that the listings do not describe.

Before you buy

What Actually Matters

01

VLANs

VLANs split one switch into separate networks, for example guests and cameras. More VLANs offer finer control. Easy Smart switches support dozens.

02

Layer 2 vs Layer 3

Layer 2 switches move traffic within a network, and Layer 3 routes between VLANs. Most homes need only Layer 2 plus a router.

03

Protection features

Loop, storm and DoS protection stop a mistake from taking the network down. Look for them in the listing.

04

PoE

Managed PoE adds port control. Check total watts. Skip it if you have no PoE devices.

05

Management method

Web GUIs suit small setups, and controllers suit many devices. Pick by network size.

Our Ranked Picks, Reviewed

1

Best Overall

NETGEAR GS308E 8-Port Easy Smart Managed Switch

Our verdict: Eight ports, up to 64 VLANs, a cross-platform web GUI and automatic DoS and loop protection.

The GS308E is an 8-port Easy Smart managed switch with up to 64 VLANs, a cross-platform web interface and automatic protection against DoS attacks, loops and broadcast storms. It costs under $25.

It wins because it packs a long list of protections and VLAN capacity into a price that makes unmanaged switches hard to justify. Loop and storm protection prevent a miswired cable from taking down a network. The web GUI works on any operating system. It is not a Layer 3 switch.

Buy it for a home lab or small office that wants VLANs. Choose Layer 3 for inter-VLAN routing.

3

Best Managed PoE

NETGEAR GS308EP 8-Port PoE+ Smart Managed Switch

Our verdict: Eight PoE+ ports at 62 watts with per-port PoE control and uninterrupted PoE during reboot.

The GS308EP has eight PoE+ ports sharing 62 watts, Easy Smart management, per-port PoE control and PoE that continues during a reboot. It costs $50 to $100.

PoE management lets you restart a camera from the browser. It ranks third because it costs more than non-PoE models and the 62 watt budget is modest.

Buy it if you run cameras or access points. Skip PoE if you do not.

Our verdict: Five fanless ports with VLAN, QoS and port monitoring.

The GS305E is a 5-port Easy Smart managed switch with VLAN, QoS and port monitoring that is fanless and energy-efficient. It costs under $25.

It is silent and small, so it fits a desk. It ranks fourth because five ports limit growth.

Buy it for a desk or a small closet. Choose eight ports for growth.

Best UniFi Entry

Ubiquiti UniFi US-8-60W Managed PoE Switch

Our verdict: Eight ports, four 802.3af PoE ports, 8Gbps non-blocking switching and UniFi app management.

The US-8-60W has eight ports, four of them 802.3af PoE, 8Gbps non-blocking switching and UniFi app management. It costs $100 to $200.

It joins a UniFi network, so one controller manages everything. It ranks sixth because it costs more than Easy Smart switches and PoE is limited to four ports.

Buy it if you run UniFi gear. Others should pick Easy Smart.

Best Layer 3

Ubiquiti UniFi USW-Pro-24-PoE Layer 3 Switch

Our verdict: A 24-port Layer 3 managed PoE switch that integrates with the UniFi controller.

The USW-Pro-24-PoE is a 24-port Layer 3 managed switch with PoE and UniFi controller integration. It costs $500 and up.

Layer 3 routes between VLANs, which Easy Smart cannot do. It ranks seventh for general buyers because of its price and size.

Buy it for larger UniFi sites needing routing. Most homes do not.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a managed switch?+

Only for VLANs, QoS or monitoring. For plain connections, unmanaged is enough.

What is the common mistake?+

Misconfiguring a VLAN and locking yourself out. Keep a management port on the default VLAN.

Is Layer 3 worth it?+

Only if you route between VLANs on the switch. A router can do that for most homes.

How do I set it up?+

Connect it, find its address with the vendor utility and log in through a browser. Change the default password.

Can I use link aggregation?+

Yes on the TP-Link models and others that list it. Both ends must support it.

How do I update firmware?+

Download it from the vendor and upload through the web page. Do not power off mid-update.

Final take

The NETGEAR GS308E is the best managed switch for most buyers, with 64 VLANs and strong protection for under $25. The TP-Link TL-SG108E adds a 3-year warranty and link aggregation, the GS308EP covers PoE, and the UniFi USW-Pro-24-PoE is for Layer 3.
