8 Best Track Saws For Woodworking 2021

Best Track Saws. The definition of a track saw is a hand-held circular saw with a long track or rectangular rail. The track saw slides on the fence during operation.

Using a track saw can provide long and precise cuts. It is a woodworking tool that contains a saw and a precision metal track. The combination of track and saw makes the cutting process more comfortable because it can enable you to set it up in no time. You can also have accurate cuts without needing double-checking or test cuts.

The track’s edge display where the saw blade will cut. All you need to do is to mark and measure the cut line and then align the track with this marking before operating the saw.

Benefits of track saws

One common benefit of track saws is that it is designed to be portable, compare to a table saw. You can carry the track saw to a workpiece’s location instead of pushing the workpiece into your table saw.

Besides this flexibility, the track saw is accurate because it is mounted to a straight guide rail. The guide rail will guide the cut to be precise.

You do not have to worry about making mistakes when cutting a workpiece with an off-center or jagged cut. This tool can provide some of the finest cuts compare to other saws.

With its flexibility and portability, the tool can be used on a more significant range of projects compared to a table saw. With this feature, you can add it to your cutting tool or arsenal.

A track saw can serve as well as a miter, circular, and panel saw, which means you will save storage space and money.

What can a track saw be used for?

1. Plunge Cuts

When you are making cut-outs for faucet, sink, or electrical fittings, you need to cut in the middle of the workpiece or known as plunge cuts. A track saw can cut in the middle y doing some of these steps:

  1. Clamp the board. Mark the cutline with a pencil.
  2. Start to measure the blade depth at the edge of the workpiece board.
  3. Make sure the measurement extends the board’s width by a couple of millimeters.
  4. Put the saw over the cutline. Raise the blade guard. Lift the saw. Pivot it utilizing the front part of the shoe. The pivoting expose the cutline below the blade.
  5. The blade must be positioned directly over the cutline. Run it at maximum speed before plunging it into the workpiece or the wood. After that, align to the cutline for improved accuracy.

2. Bevel Cuts

The pivoting shoes of the track saw can enable it to make bevel cuts. Together with one angle scale, the pivoting shoe can be adjusted to within a 0-45˚ range. After that, you can make long and accurate bevel cuts.

3. Straight and Long Miter Cuts

The track saw is very useful for making long, straight, and accurate miter cuts. Miter cuts are cuts at any angle other than 90˚ or crosscut.

4. Stud Cuts

Every time you are cutting, you do not need the track of your track saw. You can use the circular saw when cutting studs for frames or walls.

It requires measurement and cut one stock, then use it to mark the cutline on all studs. You will get workpieces of the same length, and the process is much more accurate than marking and measuring every piece individually.

5. Drywall Board Cuts

When you are cutting drywall boards, the production of dust is enormous. You can solve this problem using a track saw because it cuts drywall while collecting dust to a collection bag.

There are also track saw models with an overhead hose that vacuums the dust from the surface as you cut. By collecting dust, you will have clean air and a clear view of the cutline.

6. Plywood Cuts

A table saw or cabinet table saw will not be suitable when you are cutting plywood because you have to work on-site. If you want to cut plywood on-site, a track saw is the best tool to use.

It can help you make long rip cuts accurately because they can be interlocked and connected with other track extensions. The tracks stand firmly in their place that prevents any movement for high-accuracy cuts.

Components of Track Saws

1. Guide Rails

Circular saws can produce inaccurate cuts. If you are a pro craftsman, you can make accurate cuts with a steady hand and a lot of cutting experience.

It would be challenging for a beginner. One slip of the hand, the cut can be ruined.

To solve the inaccuracy, a guide rail can help a lot. Guide rails are tools that you attached or install on your work track saw, or circular saw to produce ultra-precise cuts without any hassle.

There are several advantages of using a guide rail. To finish rip cut, crosscut, make angled cuts up to 50″ or cutting long in plywood, MDF, and panels, all you need to do is align the guide rail with your marks to make precise cuts.

You do not need clamps because it has anti-slip guide strips.

2. Anti-chip Edges

The anti-chip edges are a crucial part of track saws. This feature support zero-clearance chip protection on the trackside of the blade.

It also gets rid of or eliminates the requirement for off-setting the guide rail from the cut-line. When you are setting up a cut, line up this tool with the cut-line for a precise cut.

The size of anti-chip edges is somewhat oversized. You can trim it for any fit for your saw. Every anti-chip edge can be set up for a different cut or saw.

3. The Saw Base

By using the saw base, you will enhance the edge quality, safety, and accuracy of the track saw cuts. The saw base gives sturdy support that stands firmly until the blade has finished the cut.

It fully supports the material to avoid tear-out. The saw base can prevent kickback by holding the kerf open to be mounted on the blade.

4. Clamps

There are sticky rubber strips located on the track bottom. In most cases, you do not need clamps to hold the workpiece firmly because they do not slip while cutting.

But if you want to keep it safe, you can clamp down the track when you are trimming doors. Cutting with a clamp will make you worry less about cutting.

But if you learn to trust the sticky strips, you do not need clamps.

What is the difference between a circular saw and a track saw?

The structure

The main difference between the track saw and circular saw is in their formation. Track saws come with a guide rail where the blade works. Circular saws do not have tracks.

Flexibility and portability

A track saw is lightweight while the circular saw is weightier so you can not carry them in hand. The track saw is more portable and provides flexibility at work.

Cut types of track saws

The performance of a circular saw can perform rip cuts, crosscut, and two cuts. While track saws can perform cross cuts, rip cuts, and intricate angled cuts.

  Circular Saw Track Saw
Structure No tracks With guide rail
Portability Less portable More portable
Flexibility Heavier Lightweight
Cuts Rip cuts, crosscut, and two cuts Cross cuts, rip cuts, and intricate angled cuts

How to Use Track Saws?

Material handling

To have cuts successfully, you must know what material you can cut with a track saw. You have to keep in mind that they are designed to shape and cut wood-based materials.

A track saw’s function is for trimming, resizing plywood, lumbers, wood stocks, cutting, and shaping. For the durability and safety of the track saw, avoid cutting concrete and ceramic materials.

Using track rail

The best part of a track saw is the ability to work on a guide rail or track. These guided fences are beneficial for accurate straight cuts or other cuts within a limited timeframe.

Safety

Track saws are tremendous and ideal power tools for beginners because they are effortless to use. Users fail to remember about their safety.

This is something very discouraging. When using track saws, always wear protective goggles and gloves so that operator remains safe while operating.

Full speed

When operating track saws, you need to wait until the blade comes to its full speed or working with its total power. This practice will make your work safe and fast.

Riving knife adjustment

A riving knife is one of the safety features of a track saw. The riving knife prevents potential kickbacks and saves you from harm.

Be prepare when you want to start the track saw. First, check the alignment of the riving knife. Adjust properly. Inspect the distance for a smooth and risk-free cutting operation.

Hold and start track saws

You should hold the saw firmly to prevent slipping during the cutting session. You will require to start the power trigger and plunge release.

Switch on the plunge release, and the blade comes out from the saw housing. After that, press the power trigger.

Once the motor is running, wait for e few moments to give the speed to get into full speed. Slower speed may damage the wood with abrupt cuts.

Turing on the track saw is by pressing the power switch and plunge switch.

Adjusting the cutting depth

For thick cutting, the track saw’s cutting depth can be adjusted. You are not recommended to use a track saw for cutting wood with less than 1/8-inch thickness.

The cutting depth can make the track saw perform without any potential hindrance. If the cutting depth is too thick, the saw blade can not reach the bottom. While a shorter depth can make the blade get damaged.

Selecting blade for track saws

The blade type and quality can determine the performance of the track saw. If you want to make the right cutting (depending on the work and cut type), the right blade selection is the key.

For you to have an excellent finish, use more tooth blades. To perform general cuts, you should select a less tooth blade.

A standard cut needs at least 14-16 teeth. While for high accuracy cuts use a blade with minimal 48 teeth. This high-accuracy cut is suitable for cutting plywood.

What is the difference between track saws and table saws?

Table saws and track saws are ideal choices for what they are designed to perform. The size of the table saw is larger, and not movable from a job site to a job site.

The track saw is moveable because you can carry them under your arm, or carry the saw with just one hand. The lightweight track saw can handle most jobs.

A table saw is stronger and can cut thicker hardwood and slabs of exotics. It can operate for hours with very few breaks. The table saw is for production workshops and large-size static locations.

The track saw is excellent for splinter-free cuts, trimming, and ripping boards. They will not fail when you set them to a precise depth.

A subflooring and wood flooring job can be fully controlled. You can finish the job safely, and the track does not move or slide while in use.

The big difference is that the track saw offers more mobility than a table saw.

  Table Saw Track Saw
Size Larger Smaller
Portability Less portable More portable
Strength Stronger For light work
Cuts Many kind of cuts Cross cuts, rip cuts, and intricate angled cuts

Uses of track saws

An operator can use a track saw for angular cuts, cross cuts, and long rip cuts accurately. In woodworking, a track saw is used to slice down large boards into smaller accurate rectangular sections.

Track saws can provide mobility, ease of use, and accurate cutting. You can cut hardboards, particle boards, wood, plywood, MDF, and OSB with track saws.

Common problems of track saw and the solution

1. The track saw will not plunge

There are three possible causes. The first is that the plunge button is not pressed all the way. Before beginning the plunge make sure the button is fully pressed. The second is the linkage of the plunge is damaged. If this happens, do not use the track saw, call the certified technician to repair it. The third is the plunge mode selection is wrong. You need to properly select the right plunge mode.

2. The saw blade will not run

These are the possible causes. There are defective gear and worn bearings. It is time to call a certified technician to fix the tool. The other cause is that the spindle lock is engaged. You need to disengage the spindle lock, start moving the blade back and forth to make sure the lock is disengaged.

3. Noise and vibration

The causes are including worn bearings, the speed of cutting is too fast, the blade is not installed properly, the blade is damaged, the blade is not aligned, and the blade is loosened. Do not force the track saw to go fast. Let the saw work at its proper speed. Before starting the saw, make sure the blade is suitable for the cut type and workpiece. Fasten the blade properly. If the blade is damaged or the bearings are worn, you need to replace them. Call a certified technician for repair or replacement.

4. Low-quality performance

The causes of the low quality cuts are mostly the blade. If the blade is dull, damaged, dirty, not secure, not installed properly, then you need to resolve these issues.

5. Saw difficult to pull back along the track

The cause is definitely the anti-kickback cam is engaged. The cam is to prevent backwards movement or kickback of the saw along the track. Turn the camming knob so the arrow points to the 0 or at the disengaged position on the base. Hold it, then slide the saw backwards. After that, should return to the 1 or at engaged position automatically.
