The 8 Best Roomba Robot Vacuums of 2026, Ranked & Reviewed

The short answer

The iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo is the best Roomba: extending spinning mop pads, an AutoWash Dock that heat-dries them and self-empties the bin, and LiDAR mapping, in the $200 to $500 range. The 415X is the premium pick, the Plus 405 the value pick, and the Max 705 the pet-hair choice.

Roomba shoppers face an odd problem. The range has four model families, a dozen suffixes, and names that look alike while hiding very different hardware. A 105 and a 105 Combo are not the same machine, and a 405 is not a 505 with a different sticker, so reading the title word by word saves money. Two letters can separate a vacuum from a self-washing mop.

We reviewed eight current Roombas and ranked them by what the hardware actually does, mainly the dock, the mop system and the brush design. Scores follow the Primea framework and rest on spec sheets and owner reports. We paid close attention to what you give up at each step down the range, because that is where the price gaps get decided.

Before you buy

What Actually Matters

01

Read the model name carefully

A Roomba 105 Vac and a 105 Combo are different machines, and a Plus 405 is not a 505. Look for Combo or 2in1 in the title for mopping, and for dock names like AutoWash or AutoEmpty. Check the title word by word before ordering, and compare the dock descriptions as carefully as the model number.

02

AutoWash vs manual pads

AutoWash docks wash and dry the mop pads between runs. Without one, you rinse the pad yourself, and a damp pad left on the robot can smell. If you mop weekly, AutoWash saves real effort. The Plus 505, 405 and 415X include it, while the 105 Combo does not.

03

Dock or compactor

A dock empties the robot into a bag, while the DustCompactor squeezes dirt inside the robot for up to 60 days. Docks suit larger homes, the compactor suits small spaces. Check which one the listing names. The Max 705 and 415X use docks, the 205 the compactor, and the 105 models neither. A dock adds a footprint of several square feet, so measure the wall first.

04

Rubber brushes

Rubber brushes resist tangles from hair better than bristles. If anyone in your home has long hair or you have pets, look for rubber or anti-tangle in the specs, and check how the brush opens for cleaning. The Max 705 lists dual rubber brushes. A rubber roller still needs checking for wrapped strands every week or two.

05

Carpet detection when mopping

A combo robot should avoid mopping carpet. The 105 Combo's LiDAR does so. Check the listing for carpet avoidance, or set no-go zones in the app. The AutoWash models also dry pads after each run. Without one, a wet pad can leave damp patches on rugs, so mark them before the first run.

Our Ranked Picks, Reviewed

1

Best Overall

iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo Robot Vacuum and Mop with AutoWash Dock

Our verdict: Extending spinning mop pads, an AutoWash Dock that heat-dries them and LiDAR mapping.

The Plus 505 Combo pairs vacuuming with extending, spinning mop pads and a dock that rinses the pads and dries them with heat after each run, so nobody handles a soiled pad. LiDAR plans each room in turn, and the same dock empties the bin. It sells in the $200 to $500 range. Heat drying matters because a damp pad left on a robot starts to smell.

It wins because it automates mopping, the chore most robots still leave to you. The 415X outdoes it on suction and dock life, but costs more. Against the cheaper Plus 405, you pay for the extending mop and a more polished system.

Best for hard-floor homes that want mopping handled start to finish. The caveat is a large dock and a premium price. Skip it if you only need basic vacuuming.

2

Best Premium Pick

iRobot Roomba 415X Robot Vacuum and Mop Combo

Our verdict: 2.3X suction, a 90-day self-emptying dock and hot-dry mop cleaning. The top of the range.

The Roomba 415X is the most expensive model in the guide, at $500+, centered on 2.3X suction, a dock that empties the robot for up to 90 days and cleans and hot-dries the mop pads. It also steers around obstacles intelligently. A 90-day dock window means a bag change a few times a year.

It ranks second only because of price. For a large home or a household that wants the longest stretch between touching the dock, it is the better machine than the 505 Combo. For a typical home, the 505 offers most of the benefit for less. Against the Max 705, it adds a mop.

Best for large homes and anyone who wants the fewest chores. The caveat is that it is overkill for small spaces. Skip it if your home is small or your budget is tight.

3

Best Value

iRobot Roomba Plus 405 2in1 Vacuum and Mop Robot with AutoWash Dock

Our verdict: Dual spinning mop pads and the AutoWash Dock at a lower price than the 505.

Costing clearly less than the 505 Combo, the Plus 405 still has the AutoWash Dock, twin spinning mop pads and quick mapping that lets it clean one room at a time. It is a true 2-in-1 rather than a vacuum with an add-on tank, and sells in the $200 to $500 range. Twin pads cover more floor per pass.

It ranks third because it lacks the extending mop arm and the other refinements of the 505. For most homes with ordinary baseboards, you will not miss them. Against the 105 Combo, it adds the AutoWash Dock, so you never rinse a pad by hand.

A good fit for buyers who want automatic mop washing and sensible pricing. The caveat is the missing edge arm. Skip it if you want the extending edge mop.

4

Best for Pet Hair

iRobot Roomba Max 705 Robot Vacuum with AutoEmpty Dock

Our verdict: Vacuum-only with powerful suction and dual rubber anti-tangle brushes.

The Roomba Max 705 puts its effort into strong suction and twin rubber brushes that resist tangling, an iRobot habit that sets it apart from bristle-roller rivals. LiDAR navigation and an AutoEmpty dock complete the setup, and it sells in the $200 to $500 range. Long hair and pet fur wrap around bristle rollers but slide off rubber fins.

It ranks fourth because it does not mop. If your home is carpeted, or you already own a mop, that is no loss and the money goes into suction and brush design. Against the 405, it trades wet cleaning for pet-hair handling.

Best for carpeted homes with long-haired people or shedding pets. The caveat is that dock bags need replacing. Skip it if you want a mop function.

5

Best for No-Dock Setup

iRobot Roomba 205 DustCompactor Vac Robot Vacuum

Our verdict: Compacts dirt inside the robot for up to 60 days between emptying. No dock to house.

The Roomba 205 DustCompactor takes a different approach from the rest of the range. Instead of a self-emptying dock it squeezes dirt down inside the robot, so you open the bin only about every 60 days. It is bagless and sells in the $100 to $200 range. Nothing bulky sits on your floor, just a small charging base.

It ranks fifth because it is not as hands-off as the docked models, and you still touch the bin every couple of months. But for a small flat where a dock does not fit, it solves the real problem. Against the 105 Vac, it adds compaction but also no dock.

Pick it for apartments and studios with limited floor space. The caveat is the manual emptying. Skip it if you want fully hands-off emptying.

6

Best Vacuum-Only Upgrade

iRobot Roomba 105X Robot Vacuum

Our verdict: 70X power-lifting suction, smart mapping and custom room cleaning from the app.

Step up from the base 105 Vac and you reach the 105X, with 70X power-lifting suction and room-specific cleaning in the iRobot Home app, where maps, no-go zones and schedules live. App and voice control are both included, and it sells in the $200 to $500 range. A no-go zone keeps the robot away from pet bowls.

Some functions live in the app, so you will rely on your phone. It ranks sixth because it has no dock, so the step up from the base model is mostly suction and control. Against the Max 705, it costs the same bracket and does not empty itself.

A good middle step for buyers who want better suction without a docked price. The caveat is that key features need the app. Skip it if you want self-emptying.

7

Best Budget Combo Pick

iRobot Roomba 105 Combo Robot Vacuum and Mop

Our verdict: Basic mopping on the entry platform, with LiDAR that detects carpet and avoids it.

The Roomba 105 Combo takes the entry 105 and gives it simple mopping. Its LiDAR spots carpet and skips it, so a wet pad never crosses your rugs. There is no AutoWash Dock, so you rinse and reattach the mop pad by hand. It sells in the $100 to $200 range.

It ranks seventh because the Plus 405 gives automatic pad washing for not much more. For a small home with a few hard-floor rooms, the manual pad is acceptable. Against the 105 Vac, it adds mopping for a bit extra.

Best for first-time mop buyers on a tight budget. The caveat is rinsing the pad yourself, and a damp pad starts to smell. Skip it if you want pads washed automatically.

8

Best Budget Pick

iRobot Roomba 105 Vac Robot Vacuum

Our verdict: Vacuum-only with LiDAR and power-lifting suction at the lowest cost of the range.

The Roomba 105 Vac only vacuums: no mop pad, no water tank, no combo dock. It does keep LiDAR and power-lifting suction, which is more mapping than most budget robots offer. It sells in the $100 to $200 range. LiDAR cleans in neat rows and finds its way home reliably.

It ranks last because everything else in the range adds something, whether a dock, mop or app control. For hard floors and low-pile carpets with light mess, it covers the basics and costs the least. Against the 105X, it gives up stronger suction and room control.

Choose it if you want neat-row cleaning from a name you know without paying for extras. The caveat is the missing dock and mop. Skip it if you want heavy-duty suction.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Roomba 105 models?+

The 105 Vac is vacuum-only, the 105 Combo adds basic mopping and the 105X adds 70X suction and app room cleaning. None has a self-emptying dock, so you empty the bin by hand. Pick by whether you need a mop or stronger suction.

Is the Plus 505 Combo worth more than the Plus 405?+

If you want the extending spinning mop, yes. Both have AutoWash Docks, so the 405 gives most of the benefit for less. The 505 also adds LiDAR polish, which matters mainly in larger or cluttered homes.

Do Roombas need an app?+

For no-go zones, room schedules and maps, yes, through the iRobot Home app. Basic cleaning can start with the robot's button, so you can run it without a phone. Plan to use the app on the 105X, which relies on it.

Will a Roomba mop my carpet?+

Combos like the 105 Combo detect carpet and avoid mopping it. For safety, also set no-go zones on rugs in the app, since a wet pad on carpet is the failure to avoid. The AutoWash models do the same.

What does the DustCompactor do?+

It compacts dirt inside the robot, so you empty it only about every 60 days instead of using a dock. Bagless, so no bags to buy. The trade is a visit to the bin, which a docked Roomba spares you.

Which Roomba is best for pet hair?+

The Max 705. Its dual rubber brushes resist tangling, and the AutoEmpty dock handles volume. For heavier loads the 415X adds stronger suction and a 90-day dock, but it costs far more. Check the brush weekly for wrapped hair.

Final take

Buy the Roomba Plus 505 Combo if you want mopping automated end to end. Take the Plus 405 for self-washing pads at a lower price, the 415X for large homes, and the Max 705 for pets and long hair. The 205 DustCompactor suits tiny apartments, and the 105 line is the entry route. Read each model name carefully before you order.
