The 7 Best Dolby Atmos Soundbars for Movies and TV, Ranked & Reviewed

The short answer

The TCL S65K is the best Dolby Atmos soundbar for most living rooms, a 5.1 system with Atmos and DTS:X, wireless rear speakers and automatic room calibration. The TCL A65K with Bang & Olufsen design brings true 3.1.2 height channels, the Flagship 5.3.4 offers the most channels, and the Samsung and LG bars suit their own TVs.

The words Dolby Atmos on a soundbar box can mean very different things. A bar can simply accept an Atmos signal and play it back as ordinary stereo or surround, or it can carry upward-firing drivers that bounce sound off the ceiling to create a height layer. The final digit in a channel count such as 3.1.2 tells you which one you have: that last number is the height speakers, and a 2.0 or 2.1 bar has none.

We ranked seven soundbars by how real their Atmos implementation looks on paper, then by surrounds, subwoofer, room calibration and ecosystem fit. We reviewed listings, which state channels and power but rarely drivers, so we treat wattage as a marketing figure. A ceiling bounce also depends on a flat, reflective ceiling of normal height, so results vary by room.

Before you buy

What Actually Matters

01

Channel count

In 5.1.2, the first number is main channels, the second is subwoofers and the third is height channels. A zero or missing third number means no height speakers. Read the whole number.

02

Height channels

Upward-firing drivers bounce sound from the ceiling. They work best with a flat ceiling of normal height. Signal-only bars lack them.

03

Rear speakers

Wireless rear speakers make surround physical. They need power sockets and room. Check whether they are included or optional.

04

Subwoofer

A subwoofer adds bass that a slim bar cannot. A .0 layout has none. Look for wireless to simplify placement.

05

TV connection and format support

Atmos over HDMI eARC gives the best result; optical cannot carry Atmos. Check that your TV has an eARC port.

Our Ranked Picks, Reviewed

1

Best Overall

TCL S65K S Series 5.1 Channel Soundbar with Dolby Atmos, Wireless Subwoofer, Wireless Surround Speakers

Our verdict: A 5.1 bar with Atmos and DTS:X, wireless rear speakers and AI room calibration.

The TCL S65K is a 5.1 channel soundbar with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, a wireless subwoofer, wireless rear surround speakers and AI Sonic automatic room calibration. It costs $200 to $500.

It wins because real rear speakers do more for a movie than any virtual trick. Sounds that pass behind you come from behind you. Room calibration tunes the output to your space, which helps when furniture and walls make a bar sound boomy. The .1 means a subwoofer for bass. The 5.1 count has no height channel, so Atmos is processed rather than reflected.

Buy it for a living room where surround matters more than overhead sound. Place the rears to the sides or behind.

Buy it if: Buyers who want physical surround speakers alongside Atmos at a moderate price.

Skip it if: You want upward-firing height drivers.

2

Best Height Channels

TCL Design Series Bang & Olufsen A65K, 3.1.2 Sound Bar with Wireless Subwoofer, Dolby Atmos

Our verdict: A slim 3.1.2 bar with two height channels, designed in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen.

The A65K is a 3.1.2 channel soundbar with a wireless subwoofer, Dolby Atmos, a Bang & Olufsen design collaboration and an ultra slim profile. It costs $200 to $500.

Second place goes to it because the .2 shows two dedicated height channels, which is what makes Atmos more than a label. A slim body sits under most TVs without blocking the screen. It has no rear speakers, so the sound comes from the front.

Choose it for a tidy setup with real overhead sound. A low ceiling helps the bounce.

3

Best Channel Count

Flagship 5.3.4 Soundbar with Dolby Atmos, 800W, 2 Wireless Rear Speakers, BassCoupling Tech

Our verdict: 5.3.4 channels, 800W and two wireless rear speakers for the fullest layout.

This flagship soundbar is a 5.3.4 channel system with Dolby Atmos, 800W power, two wireless rear speakers and BassCoupling technology. It costs $200 to $500.

Third place fits because the channel count is the highest here, with four height channels and three subwoofer channels. An 800W figure is a marketing peak number, not a sustained rating. The brand is not named in the listing, which weakens confidence in support.

Buy it for a large room and a big layout. Check the brand's warranty first.

Skip it if: You want a known brand's support.

4

Best for Samsung TVs

SAMSUNG S60D 5.0ch Soundbar with Wireless Dolby Atmos Audio, Q-Symphony, Alexa Built-in

Our verdict: A 5.0 bar with wireless Atmos, Q-Symphony TV integration and Alexa built in.

The Samsung S60D is a 5.0 channel soundbar with wireless Dolby Atmos, Q-Symphony and Alexa built in. It costs $200 to $500.

Fourth place suits it because Q-Symphony lets a compatible Samsung TV's speakers join the bar, widening the sound. It has no subwoofer in the name, since 5.0 means none, so bass is limited.

Buy it if you own a recent Samsung TV. Skip it for another brand.

5

Best for LG TVs

LG S70TY 3.1.1-Channel QNED TV Matching Soundbar, Dolby Atmos, Wow Orchestra

Our verdict: A 3.1.1 bar with a height channel, Wow Orchestra TV pairing and rear speaker readiness.

The LG S70TY is a 3.1.1 channel soundbar with Dolby Atmos, Wow Orchestra and rear speaker readiness, designed to match LG QNED TVs. The listing gives no price band.

Fifth place goes to it because Wow Orchestra pairs the bar with a compatible LG TV's speakers and one height channel adds some overhead. Rear speakers are an add-on, not included.

Buy it for a matching LG TV. Price is unlisted, so check before ordering.

6

Best Budget Subwoofer Bar

Jierben 2.1 Dolby Atmos Soundbar with Subwoofer, 150W

Our verdict: A 2.1 bar that accepts Atmos signals, with a subwoofer, at a low price.

The Jierben is a 2.1 soundbar with Dolby Atmos signal support, 150W power and a subwoofer. It costs $100 to $200.

Sixth place fits because signal support only means it accepts the format, not that it has height drivers. A 2.1 layout has none. The subwoofer adds bass.

Buy it for a cheap bass upgrade. Do not expect overhead sound.

7

Cheapest Entry

TCL S45H 2.0 Sound Bar with Dolby Atmos DTS:X Auto Room Calibration, 100W

Our verdict: A 2.0 bar with Atmos and DTS:X signal support and auto room calibration, at the lowest price.

The TCL S45H is a 2.0 soundbar with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X signal support, automatic room calibration and 100W. It costs $50 to $100.

It ranks last because a 2.0 bar has no subwoofer or height channels, so Atmos is a label. Room calibration is a nice feature at the price.

Buy it as a basic TV speaker upgrade. Add a subwoofer later if you can.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a soundbar need eARC for Atmos?+

Usually, since optical cannot carry Atmos. Use an HDMI eARC port on the TV, and check that streaming apps output Atmos.

What is the common mistake?+

Believing the Atmos label means overhead sound. A 2.0 or 2.1 bar only accepts the signal.

Is Atmos worth it over a regular soundbar?+

Only with height channels and good content. Otherwise a good 5.1 bar is better value.

Where do I place rear speakers?+

To the sides or behind the seats, at about ear level or higher, with power nearby. Follow the app's guidance.

Will it work with any TV?+

Yes through HDMI or optical, though Atmos needs eARC. Brand features like Q-Symphony need matching TVs.

How do I calibrate it?+

Run the automatic calibration in the app or remote with the room quiet and seated in your usual spot.

Final take

The TCL S65K is the best Dolby Atmos soundbar for most rooms, with real rear speakers, a subwoofer and room calibration. The A65K is the pick for true height channels in a slim bar, and the Flagship 5.3.4 offers the biggest layout. The Samsung and LG bars suit their own TVs.
