Best Hunting Knife Sharpener. Do you want to know how to sharpen a hunting knife? Hunters are heavy users of knives, and dressing down an animal can quickly dull a hunting knife.

Modern hunting knives are typically built of stronger steels to improve edge retention, allowing them to (ideally) withstand the dressing of an entire animal without the need for field sharpening.

How to choose the best hunting knife sharpener

What is hunting knife sharpener

This hunting knife sharpener was created with the athlete in mind. The best hunting knife sharpener is also extremely adaptable.

It can sharpen even the thickest hunting knife, but it can also sharpen fillet knives, small pocket knives, fine kitchen cutlery, and scissors.

Benefits of using electric knife sharpener

No dull hunting knife

If you have this item, you will never have to worry about a blunt knife or the need to run to a specialist. Sharpening a knife with an electric hunting knife sharpener takes very little time. All you have to do is plug the device into a kitchen power socket, turn it on, and insert the blade into the sharpener’s slot. If your kitchen knife has become far too dull, it may take some time; otherwise, it will take even less time.

There are no prerequisites.

On the other hand, if you haven’t used manual sharpening stones before, you should avoid them. Sharpening your kitchen knives with manual knife sharpening gear necessitates a certain level of competence.

There are too many options.

Furthermore, there are many various types of manual sharpeners available, and you may be confused about which one to choose. To sharpen a knife with manual tools, you must also hold it at a specific angle and apply the proper amount of pressure, among other things. Electric tools, on the other hand, are superior and easier to use.

Make it yourself

Another advantage of having electric knife sharpening gear at home is that you no longer need to seek expert assistance. Professional services are fairly expensive, and even if you set aside the cost, it is difficult to find a professional.

Professional knife sharpening really causes more harm than benefit to your knives. Again, you will sharpen your own knife with great care and concern, and you cannot expect the pros to do the same.

There are no measurements.

Electric knife sharpeners reduce a lot of guessing by eliminating the need to think about proper angles and pressure.

Typically, electric tools feature a variety of slots. If you only have a simple hunting knife, you can sharpen it in one slot. If your knife has become too dull, you must shift it from one slot to another to get the desired sharpness.

Sharpening and polishing are done in two separate slots. You must adjust the knife between the slots.

Depending on your needs, you could only use the sharpening or resurfacing slots. Viewing it will help you realize when you need to shift the knife from one slot to another or when the sharpening procedure is complete.

After sharpening, try cutting a piece of paper; if the paper slices cleanly, your task is done.

Factors to consider before buying electric hunting knife sharpener

Why is price such a significant factor? Because knowing and selecting how much you are willing to spend will eliminate a lot of things that you should not even be considering.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that the more costly electric knife sharpener is necessarily superior to the less expensive one! People that tell you this are, sadly, not telling you the truth.

Okay, so you’re probably asking how I’m going to decide how much I’m prepared to pay if I have no idea how much the average electric knife sharpener costs. That’s an excellent question! And to answer that question, I’d like to provide some context. After reviewing a number of these electric sharpeners, I can tell you that the prices vary a lot.

What you need know is that the prices range from as low as $20 to as high as $170. This is only true for residential options; when evaluating commercial solutions, the price range varies (I am assuming you are not looking for a commercial sharpener).

Now that you’ve established a price range, you can create a budget for how much you want to spend and proceed from there.

What to sharpen?

This is another issue that most consumers overlook and then wonder why the device doesn’t sharpen their knives. Before you even consider investigating electric knife sharpeners, you should examine your knife collection and comprehend the following:

The angle

It’s really quite simple. Edge angle is the angle calculated from an imagined vertical line (which divides the blade in half) to the hunting knife’s edge.

What do you do if you don’t know what your edge angle is? If the information isn’t available online or isn’t included on the packaging/instructions, contact the manufacturer.

Still no joy? Try a Google search to see if the blade can be classified as American/European or Asian. You should be able to proceed properly once you’ve determined this. American/European knives are often thicker than Japanese blades, which are thinner. Caution: Not all electric knife sharpeners can sharpen both Asian and Western styles.

Type of hunting knife

There are many various types of knives, so it’s crucial to know which one you’ll be sharpening. Will you be sharpening knives or utensils? Or even a weapon knife? What kind of blade are you sharpening if it’s a utensil?

Perhaps it’s a chef’s knife or a paring knife. The idea is that you’ll need to conduct your research and learn more about the type of blade you’re sharpening before you begin. I haven’t included serrated knives because they are a distinct case that will be addressed separately.

Sharpening instruments

Sharpening tools for anything from scissors to pliers and cleavers are required. A standard electric sharpener is best suited for solely working on knives.

Voltage requirements

If you’re like most individuals, you won’t need to double-check the voltage required. As a result, either everything works out fine or the unit voltage rating does not meet your needs, forcing you to return it for a refund.

The more common electric knife sharpeners, such as Chef’s Choice, Presto, and Smith’s, are all rated between 100 and 120 volts. In fact, you’d be hard pressed to locate any of their equipment rated at 220-240V.

This is solely based on my personal experience, and I could be mistaken. If you need a 220-240V item, you have two options: first, buy a transformer, and second, contact the manufacturer and inquire about the higher voltage unit.

Important: Do your investigation and confirm that the voltage in your area matches the voltage of the unit.

Serrated knives

This is more of a warning than a consideration. Serrated knives can be entirely destroyed by electric knife sharpeners. Yes, you read that correctly.

Sharpening wheels set to a steady speed will grind away your serrations, eventually leaving you with a plain edge. Serrations are a specific circumstance that necessitates more care than plain edge blades.

Warranty, evaluations, reviews, and your final decisions

Reviews can be both constructive and destructive. Unfortunately, there are numerous websites whose sole purpose is to advertise a product without addressing any of its flaws.

It goes without saying that the internet contains both valuable and useless information. It is up to you to assess and filter the information.

When looking for an electric knife sharpener, you should study both Amazon reviews and a detailed product description (with pros, cons etc.). The only thing I’ll say regarding warranties is that depending on the length of the manufacturer’s warranty and the price of the product, you may (or may not) want to consider an extended warranty.

How to sharpen a hunting knife properly

  1. To keep the whetstone from becoming jammed, wet or oil it.
  2. Find the knife’s bevel (this is the only thing that should come into contact with the stone); Making it more noticeable with a marker (as demonstrated in the video below);
  3. Begin with the coarse side of the stone (the lowest grit);
  4. Make many slow passes over the stone with one side of the pocket knife, making sure to touch the full surface of the bevel and using the proper edge bevel angle (for additional information, see the ‘Blade Grind 101’ section above). You’re finished after the marker’s marks have faded;
  5. After 10-12 leisurely passes, switch to the opposite side and repeat.
  6. Repeat the operation with a finer wheat stone (+1,000 grit) to achieve a razor-sharp pocket knife edge (optional).
  7. Get a leather strop (available here) and make 40 gentle passes on each side for a razor-sharp blade (optional).
  8. To keep the carbon steel blade from rusting, lubricate it with food grade honing oil or mineral oil.

What are equipment needed when sharpening you hunting knife

  • A rough stone.
  • A stone with a medium grit.
  • Smaller stones are ideal for field sharpening.
  • Honing rod made of ceramic. This not only removes burrs from your blades, but it’s also a useful field maintenance tool.
  • Thimble made of rubber
  • A stone holder. A sink bridge can be used.
  • Either water or oil.
  • Four or five nickels. It comes in handy for determining the proper angle.

What are knife sharpening glossary

This is the process of flattening a sharpening stone with a coarse “truing stone.” Making anything flat or “true” again, because stones will “dish out” with everyday use. Rough and medium grit stones should be trued after each usage, whereas fine stones can be trued less frequently.

The process of removing extra burrs that emerge as a result of sharpening or realigning small burrs that occur during regular use. Ceramic Honing rods are the fuel that keeps your culinary engine running until it’s time to be repaired!

The “wire edge” or piece of steel that has gathered on the cutting edge as a result of the sharpening/removing procedure. To create a smooth cutting edge, it is necessary to raise a burr while sharpening and then remove it.

When deburring or polishing the edge, this motion is utilized. Stropping can be done with either leather or a stone. Always start with the hunting knife’s spine, never the cutting edge, and spread it out like peanut butter on toast.

Why is the hunting knife not getting sharp?

Failure to sharpen at the proper angle

Important: by “correct,” we mean matching the angle now on the hunting knife, regardless of the exact degree of that angle. Matching the present angle gives you the best chance of success. Sharpening at a greater angle will produce a less sharp edge, while sharpening at a lower angle will significantly increase the time required to sharpen the hunting knife.

Failure to keep a steady angle

This is a clever way of saying don’t rock the edge while you sharpen. Once you’ve determined that you’re at the correct angle, you must maintain it. A rocking action produces a rounded, dull edge.

Not going all the way to the edge of the sharpening stone

To make a sharp edge, both sides of the edge to be sharpened must meet at a line. The only method to achieve this is to remove content until that junction is reached. In many cases, folks just haven’t generated an edge with their first grit.

How to know the hunting knife is sharp

Paper slicing

This is a trick that I believe most people are already aware of. If you can easily slice paper with your knife without it catching and tearing, your knife is reasonably sharp and ready to use. There are sharpness levels much higher than being able to cut plain old printer paper, yet a hunting knife that can do this feat is keen. This approach can also be utilized to detect any dull or damaged areas of your edge.

Magazine and phone book paper slicing

It’s the same ploy as before. However, because certain varieties of paper are thin and glossy, they are more difficult to catch with an edge. A hunting knife that can easily slice through phone book or magazine paper, especially when folded up, is extremely sharp. Perhaps it’s even sharp enough to shave with.

Sharp shave

You probably don’t need to doubt if you can shave arm hair with your hunting knife.

The fingernail trick

Stick out your index finger and (carefully) set the edge of the knife on your fingernail so that the knife is perpendicular to your finger. If your knife bites into your fingernail with minimal pressure and does not move around, it is moderately sharp.

Try to slice an onion

The skin of an onion is extremely thin and slick. You’re in good condition if your knife can easily snag and bite into the skin of an onion.
